Week 11 - Teacher-Student Rapport

Just a reminder that we do have class this Thursday, April 22nd. Please check your syllabus to remind you what you need to bring.  If you have not already turned in your foliotek receipt and signed disposition, please bring to class next week.

I believe that the art of teaching is shown in the teacher's ability to have a positive rapport with students.  According to Webster's Dictionary, the word rapport means "relation; connection, esp. harmonious or sympathetic relation: a teacher trying to establish close rapport with."  Hopefully, your cooperating teacher has a good rapport with the students.  Watch your cooperating teacher this week in order to answer the following questions:

What strategies does the teacher use to build and maintain rapport with students?  How are opportunities for success provided for each student?  Do the students have a positive connection with the teacher?

  1. My cooperating teacher has a good relationship with her students. Some classes are better than others, but that will always happen. I believe she has a good balance of discipline and fun.

  2. I believe the students in my cooperating teacher's class respect the teacher. They like to have fun and talk to her and each other, but when it comes time to work they are good students. They also have no problem asking the teacher for help. She's very approachable and understanding when necessary.

  3. Like Brookes teacher, my teacher had an excellent relationship with his students. He tried to establish a relationship with each of his classes. He knew how to balance everything in the classroom.

  4. My teacher's students knew of his out side intrests such as his band. He invited the students to a local all ages show. He was extremely understanding and exactly the kind of teacher I would like to be.

  5. My teacher is probably the most laid back first grade teacher ever! She is not like the other teachers that I observed, they were very strict and would yell at their students if they didn't pay attention or listen. But she still being laid back has control over her class. I really look up to how my teacher utilizes her classroom. Taking care of first graders is very nerve racking, but she just keeps smiling knowing that they are learning. I really appreciate her.

  6. I agree with Mariah, that is a really cool thing to know that the students know more about their teacher just as he knows about his students. It's kind of a give and take. It also gets the students to open up more!

  7. My teacher has a repoure with her students. There is one class that was really bad, but if only get that with one out of 6 classes that really isn't to bad.

  8. When a teacher takes time to get to know each any every student personally, I think then she can gain a little more respect from them. By getting to know them better you can tell if the students are troubled with family or other issues and if they trust you enought they might be able to trust you with their problems.

  9. One of my high school teachers was a difficult teacher and he was also so understanding that the students never acted out in his class because they respected him so much. He was hard but at the same time so understanding which alowed him to have a great relationship with his students.

  10. I agree with Nick when a teacher acts like they are taking an intrest in their students than it definitly makes the students think they can trust their teacher which makes it so much easier for the teacher and the student.

  11. The teacher that I observe for gets a great amount of respect for her students. She is understanding to their needs and it makes their time in the classroom a lot more enjoyable.

  12. I also agree that when a teacher takes an interest in students a certain amount of trust is obtained by both the student and the teacher.

  13. the teacher I am observing seems to have a very strong rapport with her students. Although she only teachers 1st grade she seems to maintain a relationship in both a teacher to student perspective but a friend one as well. She lets her students know that they can talk to her about anything and she really cares about them. Her students seem to trust her with the world.

  14. Mariah,

It is really cool that your teacher invites his students to his shows. Not only does it help him form a bond with his students but he also is a postive role model for the students to look up to. I had a teacher in the past that also used to come to his students games, competitions, concerts and other events too to show them he cared.

  15. Well, I have finally finished my observation. I really love the way my teacher built a working relationship with her students. She would call each of her students by Mr. or Miss and then the last name. This shows the student that the teacher has respect for them, but they are still in a professional environment. I think this is important because the students need to know that they are respected in orer to want to do the work for the teacher, but the students also need to be reminded that they are in a work environment and that certain expections are going to be held. This way they know that it is a place for work and not to mess around the whole time.

  16. Im going to comment on Sarah Bell's post. I think at a 1st grade level you need to be more laid back. 1st grade is for children, so you have to ease them into the working environment. By throwing them in and expecting too much you could be setting the student up for failure later because they might just decide they cant do the amount of work required.

  17. My cooperating teacher is the coach of many sporting teams at this highschool. Most of the students in the clasroom are athletes at this school. The definatly helps to maintain rapports with his students. He also has a great deal of respect for all of his students ond does not choose favorites. He is very giving, as he knows that students are struggling so he does give out alot of extra credit assignments. When student athletes are gone away for sports, he gives them time afterwards for them to finish up what they missed.

  18. To comment on what paige said above, i agree that it is one of the most important things when a teacher lets her students know that they can talk to her about anything and she really cares about them. Its important as a teacher to allow for your students to come and talk to you about anything. You never know what could be going on at home, on the playground or even in class behind your back!

  19. I think having a good relationship with your students is always important, that way you are able to relate to them on a level where they feel they can approach you with problems, you always want that open door policy with your students, I agree with brett being that you as a teacher do not know everything that goes on outside of the classroom making it hard for teachers to know everything

  20. teacher had an excellent relationship with his students. He always tries to establish a relationship with each of his students. He knows how to balance everything in the classroom and on the court, he is a coach. He is very giving, as he knows that students are struggling so he does give out alot of extra credit assignments. When student athletes are gone away for sports, he gives them time afterwards for them to finish up what they missed.

My teacher shows many strategies that build and maintain rapport with her students. In class yesterday a girl came in and was crying. The girl explained to the teacher that she had just put her dog to sleep. The teacher pulled her aside for a long time and consuled her and told her stories about her dog and how she had to put her dog to sleep as well. I felt like this was a real bonding experiance between the too. Also, success is easily achieved by all of her students. She sets up study session before and after school where students are able to attend in order to help prepare for exams or to even help with homework. The students have and extrememly positive reltionship with the teacher, I know this because I had her as a teacher previously! She is great and students feel like they can talk about anything with her.

    Bailee,
I like that your teacher can relate to athletes because I know when I was in high school some of my teachers believed that school was the only thing that was going on in my life. He sounds like a great teacher and coach!

  24. I also agree with nick. Its extreamly importaint for teachers to get to know there students. It not only makes them feel connected to you but you as the teacher connected to them. My fav teachers over the years are the one I know really cared about me.

  26. My host teacher uses one on one time and group activities to show rapport. Each student needs to feel like he or she can go the the teacher when there is a problem no matter how small. That is exactly what my host teacher shows her students. I just hope I can develop my mind to work with children that young and really understand how they think and feel.
