Week 10 - Meeting the needs of the individual learner

Observe this week how your cooperating teacher effectively (or ineffectively) teaches the students with special needs in the classroom. Reflect upon the following questions as you post your blog entry.

What modifications or adoptions are made wtihin the course content or curriculum to meet the needs of the individual learner? How does the teacher utilize large group, small group, and/or individualized instruction to meet the learning needs of students? How are student interests and student choice incorporated in to the students' learning opportunities?

  1. The teacher that I am observing works really well with special needs childern if the students understand the work that they are doing she will go over to their seat and walk them throught it step by step.

  2. She also gives the childern modifications if they have a IEP that says they need it.

  3. The teacher I am observing works well with the students who aren't really understanding the material. She tries to adapt to visual learners and auditory learners. She often shows students different ways to take notes and anwsers everyones questions, even if she has to go over information more than oncce. Generally she breaks the students into smaller groups in order to work on lab assignments but she lets them kind of work things out on their own and trys to only offer help when needed. The visual learners are often times given tasks to do with their hands or other types of visual activities in order to spark their interest.

  4. Nick,
Thats great that your teacher helps with special needs kids. While there is no severly speical needs students in my teachers class, she gives everyone the attention that your teacher does.

  5. Nick,
Thats amazing that your teacher works so well with special needs students. My teacher doesnt teach any speical needs children but shows the same type of compashion for her other students. Im not exactly sure what an IEP is but its nice of her to modify her job in order to teach ohers.

  6. My teacher is very helpful with the special needs kids in here classroom. In the elementary school I'm in all the special needs kids go in the same classroom. Last year was the first year my teacher had the autistic kids and she said she really struggled getting timing down because they tend to fall behind in curriculum. Now she not only helps them but she has the other kids in the class help them too. This way not only the special needs kids but the other kids in the classroom benefit from the experience as well. After having the special needs kids last year she loved it after she got everything under control and requested them again this year. She also does center for the kids, she will work on book assignment with the kids, one group will have a simple review worksheet, and the last group will play review games.

  7. Sam,

That's awesome that your teacher hits the different types of learners to make sure everyone in the class is able to understand the coursework. Not only does it help each child understand, but it also reviews and helps the kids who do already understand, comprehend it even more.

  8. The teacher that I observe for also is great with teaching all the different levels in her class. There are some children that are way ahead in class and others that are behind. The teacher has ways of accomidating all of the children in her classroom.

  9. I also agree with Sam. No matter what level of the student the teacher will find a way to help them learn and understand the material.

  10. Alright so here is my story for the week. I had to teach a class on monday. The teacher I'm working for had to go to the dentist, so instead of having a sub just have the student do busy work, we had a sub watch as I taught the class. It was awesome! I got to facilitate a discussion on the difference between capitalistic and communistic society. My instructions were to go over the material and then have the student read for the last 20 minutes. The students were so interested, and their questions were so good, I did not have time to let them read. I think it was the best experience of the observation, but it put me right in the line of fire and I really got to see if this was for me or not. After doing it, yes I am going through all this for a reason.

  11. In response to Sam's post, It is good that your teacher does a healthy mix of audio and visual. My teacher is the same way. She does a lot of demonstrations and plays songs from different eras in order to cover those basis. She also knows exactly what learning disabilities each of the students have, and adjusts how she treats the students based on them as an individual.

  12. Ms. Garlich is very aware of drakes needs. Drake is autistic and has a special teacher in the classroom at all times but when ms. Garlich is teaching she always gives him a special smile. its very encouraging to read about other peoples experiences witht thier teachers especially johns where his teacher plays with thier spcial needs students.

  13. I have not seen my teacher teach a student with special needs. I only observe her for two class periods during the day and neither of the classes has any special need students. I believe she would be a good teacher for it though, because she is very patient and deals with the rowdy students in a nice way.

  14. My teacher in my 6th grade class taught multiple special need children in my class. He was good with them, until they did not want to listen. They happened somewhat often. The students would either leave with their special teacher that was with them most of the day, or they would sit in the back of the room.

  15. There are no special needs children in the classroom I am observing, but each child learns differently and it is important to help each child to understand the learning materials and to do his or her best. The teacher I am observing really understands her students and knows how to help each child to understand what she is trying to teach them.

  16. Lauren,
It is great that the teacher you are observing helps the advanced children as well as the special needs children. I think it is important to understand every child's way of learning and to utilize that knowledge to help them in the future.

  17. There are no special needs children im the class I am observing. The teacher does however know the best way to teach each one of his students. He also makes sure that everyone in the class understands what is going on before he moves on to something else.

It is good that your teacher gives the autistic student special attention so that he still feels like he is part of the clas since he has another teacher with him all the time.

  19. My teacher is really good at adapting to her students. She has a few students who have ADHD and she gives them special seats they need to sit on. There are none that having hearing aids or visual problems. Her first grade class is very calm, except when it comes to standing in line. And during that point she just stands there and makes sure they all realize that standing in line is that important, if the students do not listen she takes away their second recess time to practice standing in line and staying in line. I really look up to how she manages her class, especially if some students are struggling in a certain subject. Also, the para she has in the class helps during her time.

  20. In response to Nick's comments,
I really like that your teacher is good with sped. children. My teacher does not have them in her room for much of the day. Maybe one period, but for the rest of the time they are normally in the resource room, or with a para.

  21. there were no students in my observation class thaat had special needs. But when the teacher grouped students together as they worked he put people with the same skill levels together. i noticed that the groups with higher skill levels had no problem on getting their work done. But the other groups needed more hlp from the teacher. There are some students that do want to learn and do well thin their studies, but there are also the class clowns who are only there to make people laugh and could care less about what grade they get. It's hard for a teacher when the students have already chosen that this class is not important to them because it is harder to engage them into discussion. And it also puts stress on the students who actually want to be there!

  22. As i said before, there were no students with special needs in the classroom i observed but there were students who were slower than others. The teacher would aske me to help the groups what were a little slower. To comment on what sarah belle sais, taking away a recess is probably a good idea. Usually younger students go to school for recess. I remember when i was that young i couldnt wait to get out on the playground. Taking away what the kids love is mean but it realy does work. Now the students will know the conciquence next time. So when the teacher asks to make a straight line they will!
