  2. Uhm, honestly I've had a lot of really good teachers but in my freshmen year of high school, I started to help out in my church's religion program. I eventually wanted to teach and started to, this year. I'm also a swim lessons instructor for a local pool and my boss commented on how I was a really good instructor. I also enjoy being around kids, so it was kind of a natural course for me to become a teacher. The persons who have helped really impacted my decision were, my mom, eigth grade religion teacher, and a couple of swim coaches from when I was younger. So, I guess in way I'm honoring those who have done so much for me. I learned a lot from my swim coach B, and my mom. Plus, teaching I can explore the realms of my favorite subject, History.

  4. my mom is a teacher so as a kid i wanted to either be a teacher or a pastor. over the years my views changed though. i wanted to pursue a career in the construction field but when i got the opportunity to play football hear i needed a different major. ultimatly i decided to go back to my childhood dreams and become an educator.

For me, there is not one single person or event that influenced me; rather, it was the experience of having many fantastic teachers and having many opportunities to teach others and be around and care for children that have helped me be where I am today. My second grade teacher was wonderful; it is partly because of her that I want to teach second grade. She has given me so many good ideas that I will incorporate into my classroom. Also, my eight years of babysitting (and I'm still going strong!) give me no doubt in my mind that I belong with younger children. I want to dedicate my life to teaching others, just as so many have taught me.

  9. My mother influenced me the most to become a teacher. She is a eduator in the Ritenour School District. She has been teaching for eight years,(she changed careers later in her life). I always hear the great expericences she has working with children. I often help her with lesson plans or visit in her classroom and I like what I see. I love helping people, especially children and I think this will be a great way to give back. My mom always wanted me to be a teacher, at first I disagreed because I wanted to do something different but I think this is the right field for me.

  10. It's hard for me to point to any one event, person or incident in my life that made me decide to be a teacher. I've know since I was a little girl that I would really enjoy teaching and I kind of always knew I would end in the profession in one way or another. I've gone through several different majors, but nothing gave me the satisfaction of knowing I would be impacting peoples lives in a real way. A few years ago I started working as a high school youth leader at my church and it was such an amazing thing to be able to encourage and influence students through my own experiences. I feel like high school is such a cool age when kids start to figure out who they are and I'm really looking forward to making a connection with students at such an important time in their lives.

  11. My entire family is mostly made up of teachers, but I ultimately decided this was the path for me during high school. My junior year I took three English courses- guess what I want to teach- and I remember my American Lit teacher. She started off most stories we had to read with "I know this is boring, but we have to read it," and things like that. True, some was kind of boring, but some I really liked. I felt setting these classics up for failre with the class was terrible, and made me want to encourage students to enjoy classics, and literature in general.

  12. There has also been a couple of people in my life that has impacted me into wanting to be a teacher. These people helped me to know right off the bat, that teaching children is what I am supposed to do and most interested in.

  13. When I first realized that I wanted to be a teacher was when I did my A plus tutoring at an elementary school. It was an excellent experience that helped me to learn more about children and the different ways they learn.

  14. My mother Terri Wolk has always been my insperation for my love of teaching. Ever since I was a child I have wanted to be a teacher. One time in second grade there was a day that you dressed for the job you wanted to grow up. I was calculus teacher. I am not going to be a math teacher anymore, but I still want to be a gym/health teacher and a coach.

  15. Dear Lauren, when I did A plus at my school I had the same experience as you. While I already knew I wanted to be a teacher, the program only increased my desire to become a teacher. I am glad you had a great experience in the program as well.

  16. Dear Korey,
I agree with you High School is a time when you explore who and what you want to be. I got lucky and became a teacher's aid and I adored it. I was also able to explore my options at work, yeah that may sound crazy but it is true. I was able to teach swim lessons to three diffrent age groups over the summer before my senior year and I really enjoyed it. That same summer, I also coached a swim team and when a swimmer I helped won or did well. I loved that feeling and I know with teaching, I'll be able to continue having that good feeling.

  17. I came to being a teacher after switching my major 2 times. In my first year of college I was a business major...loved it but it was not my passion in my second year of college I was a psychology major...loved it but didn't satisfy everything I wanted in a career! I talked to my counselor at St Charles Community College and she said that in order to combine the two I should look into teaching and I instantly knew it was my calling. I have done some observing for SCC in a 5th grade class and also a 3rd grade class and decided I want to teach 5th grade and then become an adminstator. I look forward to finishing next year and student teaching in the Fall of 2011. I also am a nanny for 3 girls and haved learned a lot about the way kids think and act and I WAS SHOCKED! I'm sure most of my posts will include sometype of reference to them.

I, too, tutored for the A+ Program, and it also cemented my desire to become a teacher. I was fortunate enough to tutor at my old elementary school under the direction of my second grade teacher. I tutored for more hours than what was required because I loved it so much. It felt like my classroom and my school kids as well, and I grew close to them. I liked watching them grow and change throughout the year and know that I was a part of that transformation.

  19. In my fifth grade math class, my teacher said that I would never make it passed algebra. That really made me want to strive to prove her wrong and I did. I ended up being placed in a normal math class by the time high school came around. After that I decided I never wanted anyone to do that to another child. so that is when I decided I wanted to become a teacher, one that has hope for her students.

  20. Dear Lauramarie Olesnckie,
I completely agree as well, a big part of wanting to become a teacher is the amazing teachers I had growing up. Some were not only teachers for me they were role models. I cannot say that about every teacher I had but the ones that made a big impact really made the difference in me wanting to become a teacher. The ones I cannot say that for had a different impact to where I wanted to become a better teacher than they were.

  21. My kindergarten Mrs. Burgart and my 5th grade teacher Mrs. Passmore both were a large influence in my desire to become a teacher. I truly believe that the experience that one has in their early years of learning influences the person that they become and the learning "career". Both teachers were not only there to feed us information but to make an impact on our lives. I work with children at BounceU and adore every minute of being with them and I babysit all the time, so I've got a little bit of experience and ALOT of practice with them!

  22. Lauren and Lauramarie,

I also tutored for A+ at an elementary school in my district during summer school. Although I already knew I wanted to teach elementary school, it reassured me that that is what I am meant to do. Little kids are so eager to learn, not many highschool students have the want to learn anymore, which is why I choose elementary. I tutored a PE Circus class which was fun, but what really inspired me was the reading class I tutored. All the kids could not wait to practice!

  23. My highschool football coach has played a big part in where I am today. To me, he was not only a teacher in the classroom or coach on the field but a instructor on the values and hardships in life. A couple of years ago and again this past year, I had the chance to give a back a little what I learned. I had honor of coaching football at a middle school level. It is a phenomenal feeling to teach another any material and an even greater feeling to know that they learned and understand what is being taught. Throughout my life I have enjoyed many of the teachers I have been around and I hope someday I, myself, can be a memorable teacher for students.

  24. Through out my schooling career I have always had teachers that have influenced me in many ways. The teacher that influenced me most and made me want to be a teacher is my mom. she used to be a teacher back in the day but stopped when she had me. she is a big part of my life and I have learned so much from her on how to be a good person. she taught me to always work hard and not give up on anything. she told me that i can always suceed in what i do if i just put my mind to it. when i had har times in my life she was always there to help me and talk to me if i needed someone to talk to. since i told her i wanted to be a teacher she has been very supportive and has told me everything she knows about children and how they work, which will help me a lot when i become a teacher. all in all she is a fabulous person and someone i idol very much

  25. While in high school i also did A+ tutoring. At the time i didn't really know if i wanted to be a teacher but that helped me realize how much i love dealing with kids. it also helped me realize how special they are and how a teacher has so much influence on them at a young age

  26. Dear Paige Bratton,

I also work with kids everyday! I am a nanny for 3 girls and have been to Bounce U with them!! It is just a huge difference working with kids outside of the classroom, but it helps so much when you actually do tutor or sub.

  27. I like working with kids and trying to help them with whatever they need. I have helped my high school football coach, coach a little league football team. It really opened my eyes and made me think that is what I want to do for my career.

  28. One teacher that influenced me the most was Mrs. A. She is the one person that helped me throughout my high school year. She is the real reason that I want to be a teacher, she really cared and wanted her students to be successful.

  29. Is seems I can relate to a lot of classmates in that a parent is a teacher or a family member is a teacher. This field is so wonderful in that there are good people who want to help students. I cant see why anyone wouldn't follow the footsteps of parents or family members. This job is so rewarding. I hope one day someone will follow in my footsteps.

  30. As a little kid I was always playing school. I would make pretend seating charts and assignments. I would play school for hours everyday. I always thought I wanted to be a teacher, but then as college got closer I wanted to pursue other options. However none of them appeal to me as much as teaching. Teaching is what I feel like I should be doing with my life. I also had an amazing teacher my senior year of high school. She tought math and math has never been something I was good at. She was the best teacher I have had and I finally got a good grade in math. If I can influence kids the way she influenced me, then I have accomplished something incredible.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with my classmates, that amazing teachers help to inspire students to become teachers to have that effect on future students. If you have teachers that have an affect on you then it will give you motivation to become an excellent teacher.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't really have any stories about teachers, but my sophomore year in high school I was missing a ton of school and basically flunking out. I blamed it all on my grandparents passing away and just didn't really take much responsibility. Then there was just one instance where one person just got on me and changed my life, and it was someone that I really looked up to. Ever since then I just kind of figured maybe I could be that person to maybe change someone's life becaus if anyone knows it's me, that it only takes one person to really inflict change on a person. I feel that being a teacher would give me the most chances to be that one person.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Just like my twin brother Blake I was also skipping class and failing out of high school when the person we look up to lectured us and really changed the way I view things. And as a teacher I feel like I could influence kids to do the right thing and stay on the right track.

  34. My mom was a big influence on my decision to become a teacher. I have grown up around teachers all my life and I have always wanted to be one. I really want to make a difference or have an impact on someone's life and I figured teaching would be the best opportunity.

  35. Dear Stephanie

I can relate to what you said because for most of my
high school years I was told that I wasn't gonna make it and that I was just wasting my time. It made me so mad hearing those things almost everyday and I feel as an educator I can do my best to motivate kids so they don't have to feel the way I did.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Dear Paige Bratton,
I love working with kids too and I been a nanny the past 3 summers for the same family. I love the feeling that you get when you know you are making them happy. Hopefully you end up making a difference that they will always remember!

  37. In response to Stephanie and Jimmy I have experienced much of the same. Many people would tell me I wouldn't amount to much. Several times many people told me those things and I would like to be the example that you can always change with hard work.

  38. I most definitely agree that the inspiration to teach comes from encountering good educators. But, I can say that for the most part, my high school was populated by teachers who really didn't seem to care. That really degraded my motivation to do well in school...I found that the only classes I really enjoyed were the very few that had teachers that would do more than just recite text from a book. So, I can say that I'm driven to be a teacher not only because of those who inspired me to be creative and progressive but also the ones who were stagnant and didn't seem to want to be there...I decided that the good ones shouldn't be so hard to find.

  39. My first grade teacher Mrs. Hughes is one of the largest reason I am pursuing a carreer in education. She took extra time after class to help me expand on my learning. Also we stayed in contact many years after and she acted as a great mentor for me throughout highschool. Two summers ago I went to help her first grade summer school students improve on some of their skills. I had alot of non english speakers in the class and luckily with my spanish backround I tried to make the transition of spanish to english easier for them. Overall it was a great experiance, but I learned that working with younger kids isn't really my calling. Which is why I am currently planning on becoming a high school biology teacher.

  41. Mack,
I know what you're saying about teachers who don't care. I never really understood why someone would go into the teaching profession if they didn't sincerely want to see their students succeed. I think as teachers, you should have a desire for your students to grow and learn; it's just not fair to the students if you don't.

  42. Paige,Lauren and Lauramarie,
I also did A+ tutoring for my school. I actually did mine with high school students, which turned out to be alot of fun. At first it was really awkward because I had to tutor people I actually knew, but in the end it turned out to be just fine. I even learned things that helped me in my own studies from the students I was tutoring.

My the past two years of college my major has been Biology and i liked it, i really did but something was missing. I have always loved coaching kids and helping people my age. When I was little I always said I wanted to be a teacher but deicded agaisnt it mainly because of how much they make (salary). After two years of Biology-Pre Vet I decided it was time to make the change to something I will LOVE and it is the most amazing feeling. Thinking about teaching/planning is so exciting. I love helping others and planning for things. I actually already have a few teaching credits from last semester (advisor screw up ha) and I am enjoying it more and more!

    Samanatha,
I def understand about having that ONE teacher who stood out-either good or bad. I had that one teacher in grade school who really stood out and would go the extra mile, she made me want to be like her and help students/players the way she did. On the otherhand-we have all had that bad teacher or coach who did things so wrong you want to become a teacher or coach just so you can do the things right because they drove you crazy!!

  47. All my best teachers were high school, history teachers. One in particular stand out to me above the rest. He taught me both my sophmore and senior years. He made the classes very interesting and made me want to succeed in his class. However, this is not what really inspired me. When I was in high school, I went through a stent of depression. This particular teacher, helped me and mentored me throughout my year in high school. I do not consider him just a teacher of mine, but a very dear friend. Because of him, it is my goal in life to help teens get through those odd and hectic years of there lives, in the same way he did for me.

  48. In response to Anna Biscan's post, I agree my mom was always very supportive of me becoming a teacher. It was very helpful to have her support. It was hard because my dad never really bought into the idea because teachers make no money, but I eventually got him to come around to the idea.

I see you have switched majors quite a bit too. It's difficult to nail down what you want to do for the rest of your life one or two years after high school. lol are you wanting to teach elementary? If you are, you have more courage than myself. Thats cool you get to nanny three girls. I have two nieces are they and their mother (my sister) live with me and my dad so i get to watch them everynow and then. Although two are a handfull, i can't imagine watching three. lol

  50. I wanted to be a teacher after my first year in high school. My PE teacher was also my coach and he had a big influence on why i want to become a teacher. 52. I actually did not think about becoming a teacher until last semester. A big influence in my life has been my parents. They are my heroes and they have always supported my goals and dreams in life. My dad is an engineer, which is what I was going to be until I switched to teaching because I talked to my mom, who is a teacher, about it and she definitely made me feel good about my decision. Plus, I LOVE children!!! They are wonderful and so honest. I know this blog is late but I worked and totally just remembered it as I was going to bed!

  53. I definitely agree with the previous bloggers about the fact that teachers inspire us to be who we are as adults. By watching other teachers our whole lives, we should know exactly what to do and what not to do to be successful teachers! I know we can all do this and be very good at it because we've had the tools our whole lives; now we just have to put our tools to the test and mold other young minds into successful adults!

The teachers that left lasting impacts on my life and the teachers that really cared about my journey after graduation. I want to be a mentor and a outlet for creativity. I recently became a hoop dance instructor. I love to watch my students grow and progress with my help, Its a beautiful thang :)

  57. The vaule of education was always really stressed while I was growing up. My father was a middle school teacher before he became a principal, his father taught high-school before he became a principal, and a professor. My mother also teaches early childhood education so not only did I get experience in the education field from the student view, I also got to see what it was like to be a teacher outside of the classroom. My parents love their jobs and I really think I would too so I am pursuing teaching as well. My past teachers have also motivated to pursue teaching. I have had some great teachers,I couldn't really just focus on one. Most of my favourite teachers are from my high-school, because of the maturity of high-school students and range of problems high-school students typically face, I think it really makes the student-teacher relationship a great one. Therefore, I want to teach high-school.

My teacher that influenced me had to be my 5th grade math teacher who taught us students in a very small classroom with little windows and he didn't even get a desk to himself yet because he was new. But I always remembered how he made us struggling students in the concept of math feel like we could figure out any problem. I can remeber when I was in hishschool I had very close friends who were flunking out and didn't really care about education, however we had this one coach/ social studies teacher who sat us all down one day and spoke to us on how we felt about life and school. It was really intersting how he changed all of our outlooks on life and values. I'll never forget his story he told us.

She never encouraged anyone to do better or to strive for their goals. She once told me that I would not be successful in life. I am going to prove to her I have the ability to achieve. 65. If I could choose any three characteristics, I would choose Inspirational, Respectful, and Organized. I am working towards teaching high school and I think these are the best beacause the students must Respect who their teacher is or else they won't believe a word out of their mouth; the feeling has to be mutual though. Organization will ensure that every lesson plan is covered and if too many snow days pile up, I know how to adjust my schedule so every student is learning excatly what I need them to. And being Inspirational is very important. As I teacher, I want to instill some of my passion into my students and push them to go above and beyond their limitations. Challenging them might do the same, but to me, Inspiration comes from the heart and thats a lot more important.

  66. If I could choose certain traits for myself that would make me a better teacher I would have to choose organized, challenging, inspiring. These 3 qualities are ones I hope to have becuase first I go crazy if Im not organized and it was always frustrating when one of my teachers would loose an assignment of mine, also I believe if you dont challenge your students then how will they ever learn to challenge themselves. As for ispiring I hope I will be a good role model, someone they can look up to.

I have always been under the impression that I needed a 3.0 in order to get the certificate. This is very good to know since, because of a bad semester, I am on the boarder of a 3.0. It really takes some of the pressure off me. However, it would be nice to get a higher GPA in order to have better chances of getting a job.

  74. 2 million minutes was very engaging to watch realizing that we are known as the lazy nation. Thats upsetting however I would have it no other way all these other cultures are so focused on achieving they are not finding the pleasures in life which can't come from a book or a test. It was sad that none of the kids from china or india got into to where they wanted the competitiveness was amazing but rediculous.
